Avoid Melting Eyeliner

by Kori Ellis

Summer eyelinerSummer makeup can get tricky with the humidity and heat. You don’t want to look like your face is melting off. Here are a few tips from makeup artist Susmta Patel, the founder and creative director of “Studio Sush,” to avoid smeared, melted eyeliner.

Choose an eyeliner that is less likely to smear. Buy a water-proof or smear-resistant formula. Liquid eye liner can be applied more accurately and you are less likely to have to remove any excess. Consider buying an eyeliner sealant. This liquid product is mixed with powdered eyeliner and applied with an eyeliner brush.

Prepare your face before applying your eyeliner. Begin with a clean face. Oiliness around the eye encourages eyeliner to travel. Apply a coat of translucent powder underneath your eye.

Apply your eyeliner as usual. Sweep away any extra translucent powder from under your eye with a fluffy brush. Seal your eyeliner by using an eye-lining brush coated with eye shadow of the same shade as your eyeliner. The powdery formulation will lock the eyeliner in place. Translucent powder will also work to seal your eyeliner.

Use oil-free foundations and concealers near your eyes in order to prevent melting eyeliner.

Top 10: Cities to Find a Romantic Man

By Aly Walansky

It’s National Romance Month, and in recognition,  Chemistry.com just released the nation’s Top 10 Cities to Find a Romantic Man.

“It’s a myth that men aren’t as romantic as women,” says Dr. Helen Fisher, Chief Scientific Advisor to Chemistry.com. “Your romantic streak just depends on your biological makeup.  Based on my research at Chemistry.com, I have found that men who are more expressive of estrogen (and there are lots of them, including some football players), fall in love more regularly than others.  These men are also the most creative when it comes to planning romantic activities, and romantic times are particularly meaningful to them.”

Chemistry.com’s data has revealed that the most romantic men in America can be found in cities known for their hip, laid-back culture, with San Francisco, CA , Portland, OR , and Austin, TX claiming the top three spots. The full findings can be found on Chemistry’s official blog, The Spark.

So move over, Paris… Here are the Top 10 Cities to Find a Romantic Man based on research from Chemistry.com:

  1. San Francisco, CA
  2. Portland, OR
  3. Austin, TX
  4. Salt Lake City, UT
  5. Hartford, CT
  6. Boston, MA
  7. Seattle, WA
  8. New York, NY
  9. Los Angeles, CA
  10. Washington D.C.

Why are Women Given Anti-Depressants To Relieve PMS?

By Aly Walansky

Nearly 10 years ago, the FDA approved the anti-depressant prescription drug Zoloft for the treatment of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and one expert believes that’s 10 years too long, especially when natural alternatives have been proven to reduce PMS symptoms without drugs.

“It seems almost alien to me why someone would take a drug to relieve PMS when the drug’s list of potential side effects – drowsiness, nausea, headache, loss of appetite, anxiety, panic attacks, hostility, aggressiveness, restlessness and depression – are almost an identical match for the symptoms of the ailment they’re trying to relieve,” said Michael Mooney, Director of Research and Education at natural health company SuperNutrition Life Extension Research (www.supernutritionusa.com).

“There is a solid base of research that has shown that women can reduce PMS without taking a prescription drug. In fact, there are six simple, safe nutrients the body uses all the time that have been shown to reduce PMS discomfort – but they need to be taken in adequate potencies. These nutrients don’t have a list of side effects that sound worse than the PMS itself.”

Mooney cited six natural nutrients that have been shown to relieve PMS:

· Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) – According to a study of 630 women published in the British Journal of Clinical Practice, 100 mg to 150 mg of supplemental vitamin B6 reduced PMS in about 66 percent of the women, while 160 mg to 200 mg of vitamin B6 reduced PMS in about 79 percent of the women.

· Vitamin D – The Archives of Internal Medicine published a study in 2005 which concluded that women with a higher median vitamin D intake of 706 IU per day had significantly less (or no) PMS than subjects who got a median of the least amount of vitamin D, 112 IU per day. So it’s not just about getting some vitamin D, but rather getting a potent dose.

· Chaste tree berry (Vitex) – This extract has been shown to reduce PMS, based on a randomized placebo-controlled 3-month study of premenstrual syndrome in 170 women (average age 36) which was published in the British Medical Journal. The results showed that 20 mg of chaste berry extract reduced PMS about 28% better than placebo. The women noted significant reductions in irritability, mood disturbances, anger, headache, and breast fullness compared to the placebo group.

· Calcium carbonate – The Journal of General Internal Medicine published the results of a study that concluded that calcium carbonate could reduce pain and water retention before and during a woman’s cycle. This randomized placebo-controlled study of 78 women showed a 58 percent better reduction in PMS with 1,000 mg of calcium carbonate than with placebo during the luteal and menstrual phases of the reproductive cycle.

· Magnesium – Two double-blind, placebo-controlled studies published in the Journal of Women’s Health showed that magnesium at 360 mg per day reduced headaches and pain, and at 200 mg reduced weight gain, fluid retention, swelling of extremities, breast tenderness and abdominal bloating.

· Vitamin E – The Journal of Reproductive Medicine published a study that showed vitamin E reduced 15 categories of PMS symptoms. This randomized, placebo-controlled study confirmed a previous study that showed all major categories of PMS symptoms are improved with a daily supplementation of 400 IU of vitamin E.” In all 15 categories of symptoms, vitamin E supplemented women reported 27-42 percent reduction in severity.

“The effects of these nutrients start the first month and generally reach maximum PMS reduction levels by month three,” Mooney added. “Women deserve to share the fruits of modern nutritional science and be informed that they can reduce their PMS discomfort without relying on drugs with all their dangerous side effects, but instead, by using nutrients that are natural to the body in the proven effective potencies.”

The Happy Hooker

by: Yolanda Shoshana

Ever hear of a woman named Xaviera Hollander? If not maybe you have heard the term the  Happy Hooker.

I have been spending some quality time researching Hollander since I am writing a one woman show about sex. While most people have heard of Heidi Fleiss, some people have no knowledge about Hollander.

In a short time, Hollander went from being a call girl to becoming one of the most famous madams of New York City when she opened up her brothel, Xaviera’s Happy House. In 1971, she was arrested for prostitution and forced to leave the county. It was then that she wrote the best selling memoir, The Happy Hooker: My Own Story.  The book is a delightful read as well as packed with great tips about men. Madams do tend to have great skills in the boudoir.

The book also inspired a movie by the same name starring Lynne Redgrave. Unfortunately, the movie was not filled with a lot of porn scenes it focused more on greed and lust in The Big Apple.

Hollander has given lectures on the “do and don’ts of sex in Canada, Holland, and various cities in Europe.  For 35 years she wrote a monthly advice column for Penthouse Magazine called Call Me Madam and she has remained their most popular columnist.

She now operates a unique bed and breakfast in Amsterdam called the Happy House Bed & Breakfast and produces theater in Europe. Rumor has it there is Happy Hooker musical in the works.

Can You Overcome “Approval Addiction?”

By Aly Walansky

It’s the reason your sex life is stuck in a rut, and it’s the same thing holding you back from advancing your career, your friendships and everything else you dream of getting out of life.

It’s called approval addiction, or valuing the opinion of others above your own.  We don’t hear much about it, but many mental health professionals say it’s the most debilitating and destructive of all addictions – even worse than drinking, drugs or gambling because it impacts everything we do.

Mental toughness expert Steve Siebold, author of the international best-seller 177 Mental Toughness Secrets of The World Class, says the upside is once you overcome approval addiction to any significant degree, you’re free of the psychological chains that bind you from ever experiencing world-class success.  He says if you’re not getting what you want out of life, chances are you’re suffering from approval addiction.

In the bedroom, you may fear your partner will be dissatisfied if you try something new.  Instead of risking rejection, you keep doing the same old thing and both you and your partner find sex boring and becoming less frequent.

In the workplace, you don’t bring new ideas to the table because you think your superiors and co-workers won’t agree with your solutions and visions.  As a result, you’re stuck in the same old job never moving up the corporate ladder.

You may want to lose weight, get fit, try a new hairdo, change your wardrobe, buy a sports car, but you wonder how other people will perceive you.  Therefore, you keep everything the same, never taking risks and willing to try new things.  Approval addiction is holding you back from experiencing life.

Here are a few suggestions from Siebold on overcoming approval addicition in the bedroom, the boardroom and everywhere else:

  • Stop caring what other people think.
  • You don’t have to be a people-pleaser.
  • It’s okay to disagree with others.
  • Learn to say no.
  • Live your life how you want to live it.
  • Develop a world-class self-talk.
  • Don’t always play it safe; learn to take risks.
  • Constantly feed your visions and starve your fears.
  • Stay in the present and operate from objective reality.

Siebold says don’t waste your time living for someone else, overcome your approval addictions and live life how you want to live it.
