Royal Wedding Countdown: Treatments to Avoid As the Time Comes Close

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

By Aly Walansky

All brides want flawless and glowing skin on their wedding day.  But in an effort to look and feel especially beautiful, soon-to-be brides often splurge on beauty treatments that they haven’t done before, says Mike Sendogan, Clinical Director of LaserTouch Aesthetics, a luxury medspa in SoHo and Midtown Manhattan: www.lasertouchsoho.com.

Any beauty treatment that you’re trying for the first time should be done a minimum of two weeks before your wedding day to give any unexpected reactions or irritations time to fade.   Below are four wedding-week DON’TS:

1. Botox. Botox takes four to five days to kick in, and you wouldn’t want to discover one day before the wedding that a brow has dropped or elevated unattractively.

2. Chemical Peels. This type of facial is designed to dissolve dead skin cells and reveal brighter skin. It also helps erase fine lines and lighten dark blotches for a more even-toned complexion.   Do this at least two weeks before your wedding day because even a gentle chemical peel can cause drying that may be annoying to apply makeup over.

3. Fillers.  Lip plumping is popular with brides, but filler in the lips can look swollen initially—which is not very photogenic.   All fillers can also cause bruising that may last up to two weeks, so be sure to give yourself time to heal.

4. Microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion, which uses a machine to buff skin, is also a commonly sought-after pre wedding beauty treatment.  Mike suggests not going the week before your wedding day because side effects may include redness, sensitivity, and breakouts.  Avoid that stress by consulting with a professional three months before your wedding day to come up with a personalized routine.

Wash and Glow

If it’s chilly and not quite spring-like in your neck of the woods, don’t fret, spring will be here eventually and when it does arrive, you’ll want to be ready!  “Ready” means willing and able to shed those tights, boots, long sleeves and so on.  For me, it’s always liberating on that first sunny day when you can loose the tights and your legs can breathe again.  While self-tanner pre-Memorial Day may seem aggressive, a subtle glow never hurt anyone! http://cdn.blogs.sheknows.com/articles.lovingyou.com/2011/04/image.jpg

Enter St. Tropez Skin Illuminator, the pocket-size product that was all the rage at London Fashion Week.  It finishes the skin with a gorgeous iridescent sheen, can be worn alone or to complement a tan.  Now available in Rose Gold, Gold and Violet, each shade contours and highlights, whether you want that 70′s deep golden glow, flushed/flirty polish of rose, or the best-selling illumination magic of Violet, this collection has you covered.  Finally a product you can use both before AND after spending time in the sun, a must for sure!

Another personal favorite is L’Oreal’s Sublime Bronze One Day Tinted Gel.  This bronze colored gel provides a sheer, buildable tint of color that lasts for one day!  Maple extract and caramel are natural colorants that give a totally natural glow, so it blends well on even the palest of legs.  The color makes it easy to rub the gel on evenly and i dries in a matter of seconds without a chemical smell.  I used it recently and loved how it gave my legs the perfect glow and even though I was worried it might streak if I went to the gym that night, it did no such thing, it stayed put until I scrubbed it off in the shower.  Glowing perfection!http://cdn.blogs.sheknows.com/articles.lovingyou.com/2011/04/ADKwrmkEmcpa4ZsUM-gbEFZUReh0QcYH_DBQ5AYI4YSr6qY8S-v1ICGZdG39JkH1hYPLGbE43d0rIO2kKgyePZOWoMt5gJ5qLun79YveAYabWt6wuIt05avEvb8IcUoAzwnH7X8gbwzhWnvQCNXl0fSi.jpg

Easy Ways to Fight Wrinkles

Monday, April 18th, 2011

by Kori Ellis

Stop wrinkles and fine lines before they start with these anti-wrinkle tips and tricks.

Icon Eyewear SunglassesPut on oversized sunglasses
A pair of giant, glamorous sunglasses will not only hide tired eyes, they’ll also help fight wrinkles in two ways. First of all, big sunglasses stop you from squinting — which can lead to crow’s feet over time. And secondly, they’ll protect the sensitive skin around your eye area from the sun’s harmful rays and their anti-aging effects.

Workout every day
Exercise isn’t just good for your body, it’s essential for your skin. Exercise increases oxygen production and the release of damaging toxins. If you allow toxins to build up in your skin, even your best anti-aging creams won’t do their job. Exercise will also help reduce stress — another cause of wrinkles.

Stop smoking
Are you still smoking? Quit today. Cigarette smoke does serious damage to you skin — as if causing cancer isn’t enough. Reduce your alcohol consumption too. Overindulging in alcoholic beverages puts a strain on your body, dehydrating your skin and accelerating wrinkles.

Pick the right skin care products
Use facial moisturizer and eye cream twice daily. Look for products that contain antioxidants and hyaluronic acid. Read more about the top skin anti-aging ingredients and find out which anti-wrinkle ingredients work best.

Reese Witherspoon Launches 2011 Avon Walks

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

by Kori Ellis

Every three minutes someone in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer. That’s why it’s so important that we support organizations that benefit breast cancer research and treatment.

We all know that every October, many fashion and beauty companies think pink and create special products to raise awareness and benefit the cause. But numerous organizations contribute through other events throughout the year. One of those companies is Avon.

Funds raised by the Avon Walks for Breast Cancer provide women and men with the breast cancer screening, support and treatment they need regardless of their ability to pay, and funds leading-edge breast cancer research across the country.

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon, Honorary Chair of the Avon Foundation for Women, recently kicked off registration for the 2011 Avon Walks for Breast Cancer. The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer raises both awareness and life-saving funds to fight breast cancer through a series of nine fundraising walks throughout the year. Each Avon Walk is a 2-day, 39-mile, life-changing weekend.

In a new online video, Reese invites viewers to register for the walks, providing them with a $25 registration discount and a chance to win free tickets to the premiere of Reese’s new movie, Water for Elephants. Contestants will be entered when they share the video among their social networks. The premiere will take place on Sunday, April 17th in New York City at the Ziegfeld.

You can spread the word by sharing the Avon Walks Facebook page or Twitter feed, or you can simply watch the video and click to share it via email, a post to Facebook, or a Tweet.

To register for an Avon Walk, please visit: avonwalk.org.

Take a Bite Out of Your Beauty Routine

Monday, March 21st, 2011

By: Erin Brady

The newest makeup line to hit your local Sephora is called Bite Beauty, founded by Susanne Langmuir.  This new, all-natural line offers a variety of products solely for the lips, all infused with the powerful antioxidant resveratol.  This line marks the first time that resveratol has been used in lip stains or lipsticks.  Resveratol is naturally present in grapes and red wine and it’s both an antioxidant and a potent anti-inflammatory agent all in one.  Therefore, these products will protect the delicate lip skin from free radical damage due to sun exposure and pollution, helping with premature aging.  You may not think your lips age, but without proper protection they can certainly dry out and get wrinkly, making it hard to use some of your favorite lipsticks, who wants that?!  Bite’s products come in hues that range from nude, to plum to vibrant fuchsia and coral and they use only organic shea and fruit butters.  Their highly pigmented, long-lasting shades were designed by industry-leading makeup artists.  With prices ranging from $18-$36, Bite Beauty offers good-for-you products that are good for your wallet, too.  Here are some of the lines best-sellers:

  • Luminous Crème Lipstick ($24): Get long-lasting, lush-colored lips with this creamy, antioxidant-rich lipstick—available in 24 shades.
  • Lip Shine ($20): Hydrate, illuminate, and condition your lips with this translucent gloss, infused with nourishing jojoba beads.
  • Superfruit Butter ($18): This multipurpose mixture contains superfoods that protect, nourish, and moisturize skin, lips, and cuticles
  • Vitamin Gel ($18): Give your lips a dose of essential oils and vitamin C with this sheer lip gel, loaded with micronized multivitamins and organic fruit juices.

Bite Beauty products are available exclusively at Sephora.

Beautiful colors are blooming in fashion and makeup for spring — pinks, purples and oranges. Therefore, you might be surprised that one of the hottest colors in nail polish for the season is gray.

Here are three gray nail colors that we really love. You can coordinate them with gray eye shadow, along with pink lips and cheeks.

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

by Kori Ellis

Women’s Health magazine has Emma Roberts on their April 2011 Beauty Flip Cover. Emma, who is starring in the upcoming movie, “Scream 4,” offers a selection of pointers and insight into her own beauty routine.

Women's Health - Emma Roberts

Emma’s feel-pretty pointers…

  • “Even if I get home late and I’m tired, I always wash my face [before going to bed]. There’s nothing worse than waking up with makeup on!”
  • “I put a little hair spray on a toothbrush and brush my eyebrows so they stay upright.”
  • “I also wear a moisturizer with SPF and do a deep-cleansing mask once or twice a week.”
  • “If I had to use only one makeup product, it would be mascara. I pile it on. I also love fake lashes. I buy individual lashes at the drugstore and use tweezers to apply them myself. It’s hard to do but so worth it.”
  • “I almost always have color on my fingers and toes. At the moment, I’m loving navy blue and gray—colors that are fun but also classy.”

Their third annual, special 24-page Beauty Bonus in the April 2011 issue (which is on sale now) is packed with hundreds of amazing hair, skin, and makeup tips and tricks.

Sexy Glow: NARS Orgasm Illuminator

Friday, March 18th, 2011

By:  Lianne Farbes

Looking for something that will give you that sexy glow?  Unless you are near a beach, you may be feeling a bit pale, so now that it’s getting warmer you will need one thing in your life, a luminizer/illuminator.  One of my FAVORITES comes from NARS, their Orgasm Illuminator is an incredible multi-use product that will have your skin looking glowy and fabulous now AND by the time you hit the beach this summer.

Luminizers are the fastest way to achieve a very subtle glow.  Used alone or with a foundation or tinted moisturizer the effects can range from very subtle to all out dazzling.  The great thing about the NARS illuminator is consistency and color.  Now, if you find that Orgasm is the wrong shade for you guess what?  NARS makes them in four shades just in case.  If you use this with a moisturizer/tinted moisturizer the effect will be very subtle (if you are used to something more natural then this is the way for you). If heavier coverage is needed, this mixes beautifully with foundation as well.  My favorite look is alone or with moisturizer.

Here are some tips for working with the product:

  • Make sure you start with clean hands Don’t laugh! It’s a common mistake people make when applying things on their faces.
  • Start with a small amount of product You can always add more but can’t take any away.
  • When mixing with foundation or tinted moisturizer make sure you blend everything well before applying to your face, this way you avoid having spots where the product is more concentrated than others.
  • Blend blend blend If you use a sponge I recommend a beauty blender if not use your fingers and work quickly to blend well before it dries.
