Haircuts for a Good Cause Courtesy of Davines

Friday, June 17th, 2011

By: Erin Brady

Are you in need of a good haircut this summer?  Want to give back to a worthwhile cause?  Look no further than Sustainable Beauty Day which is this coming Monday, June 20th, 2011. Sustainable Beauty Day is a proud partnership between Davines and The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation.  It was built upon a perfect balance of beauty and sustainability, Davines’ commitment to minimizing their environmental impact spans from the ethically sourced natural ingredients they choose to their eco-friendly headquarters in Parma, Italy.  In keeping with their dedication to environmental responsibility, Davines has joined forces with The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, a unique charity that benefits impoverished communities through the planting of fruit trees.  By planting fruit trees in communities worldwide, The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation elevates an environmental project to the level of social sustainability—a beautiful fit for Davines.

Sustainable Beauty Day calls for salons that are closed on Mondays to open their doors on June 20, 2011 and offer their clients cut and styling services free of charge.  Each client will be encouraged to make a $15 minimum donation for the service and 100% of the proceeds will benefit The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation.  Davines and The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation strive to raise $20,000 to fund a new fruit tree planting initiative called Sustainabilitree in the Sofala Province of Mozambique, Africa.  Sustainabilitree stands to alleviate world hunger, combat global warming, strengthen communities, and improve the surrounding air, soil, and water quality.

To view the list of participating salons across the US, please visit the Davines website: http://news.davines.com/us/2011/05/20/1st-sustainable-beauty-day-usa/

Beat Summer Hair Woes

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

by Kori Ellis

Summer hairSummer is almost here and with it comes hot, sticky weather that can damage your hair or at least, cause bad hair days. To keep your hair looking its best, consider these hair tips, product suggestions and styling ideas from Zahir Ziani, the National Creative Director at Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spas.

Don’t touch! – Playing with or touching your hair can loosen the style out of its shape, creating friction, which causes the hair to expand and increases frizz and volume.

Be cool – Skip blow drying your hair and styling with heated tools. The heat can damage hair cuticles and cause more frizz.

Go long – When temperatures and humidity are at their highest, control your hair by keeping it long and heavy. The trick I use with all my clients is adding in curl to the ends so hair becomes “anchored” or weighed down.

Accept change – The texture of your hair can fluctuate with the seasons, so the products you use in winter may not be effective for smoothing hair and taming frizz in the summer. The Kerastase BAIN OLÉO-RELAX is a perfect summertime beauty essential!

Wear SPF – Hair, like skin, needs protection from harmful UV exposure. Look for hair care brands that offer sun protection in their products, with a minimum of SPF 15. Like with your skin, use hair care products formulated with antioxidant vitamins (A, C, E) to prevent against free radical damage. Also try taking a vitamin supplement for hair and nails during this time of year.

Bounce-back – Use fabric-wrapped elastics; they are gentle on your hair and less likely to cause breakage. If you only wear non-metal elastics, do not wrap them around your hair more than twice. Before you go to bed, remove any elastic gently, as it can tangle hair during the night.

Eva Mendes and Naomi Watts for Pantene

Monday, May 9th, 2011

by Kori Ellis

Eva MendesYou might not think of Eva Mendes and Naomi Watts as being too similar. However, they do have one thing in common — they are the new faces (or should that be “new heads”) of Pantene.

Pantene tapped Eva Mendes to represent their “Breakage to Strength” collection, while Watts will be modeling for their “Flat to Volume” line in the new Pantene ad campaign coming up this summer.

“The amount of torture I put my hair through with flat irons, blow dryers and curling irons leaves my hair extremely damaged,” Mendes said in a press release. “With Pantene I can use all of these tools and still keep my hair healthy.”

“Since I became a mother, the time I have for myself has shrunk dramatically. So I am thrilled with Pantene because the quality of the products helps me get the volume I want with very little effort at all,” said Watts.

The print ads and TV commercials featuring Eva Mendes and Naomi Watts are set to launch in July.

What do you think about the new faces of Pantene?

  • Get that elusive undone-yet-done hairstyle this spring with the new Bb. Texture hair(un)dressing Crème. The perfect textured look can sometimes take much longer than expected and dozens of products, but this new crème takes the best of a gel and combines it with the best of a cream for an alcohol-free blend that will create volume, texture and that desired piecey-ness that few products can achieve.  Work the crème through damp hair, start with a small amount, let sit for a minute, then loosen and ruffle hair freehand, add more crème to achieve your desired rolled out of bed look.  Use a diffuser or more volume all over.  Available in salons nationwide or at www.bumbleandbumble.com for $26.
  • Frizz-free in time for spring or warm weather getaways, you must go purchase L’Oreal’s  EverSleek Frizz Taming Crème Serum.  This serum is one of seven products in the new L’Oreal EverSleek Sulfate-Free Smoothing System of shampoos, conditioners and stylers. Free of heavy silicones and formulated with argan, sunflower and olive oils, it weightlessly smoothes hair for 48-hour frizz control.  Use 1-2 pumps on wet hair for a sleek and shiny mane, without feeling weighed down or coated.  This formula is also 100% vegan and is not tested on animals.  Get this before the temps warm up and it flies off the shelves, available at drugstores and mass retailers nationwide for $8.99.
  • Rita Hazan Root Concealer Temporary Color Touch-Up Spray:  Rita Hazan has given Hollywood’s finest the most gorgeous highlights and colors for years.  For those lucky enough to receive her services in NYC, they can attest that she constantly has new tips and tricks to meet her clients’ needs.  Her first product innovation will prove to change the way women cover up their roots in between salon visits.  The Root Concealer Temporary Color Touch-Up Spray will help solve that age-old problem.  The spray bottle has a nozzle that sprays the product directly where you want it: on top, underneath layers and even covering extra large patches of hair.  The spray will remain on until washed out, even rain won’t stand in your way.  Available in four shades: blonde, light brown, dark brown/black and red, so all hair types are covered.  Available at Sephora.com now or in Sephora stores on March 24 for $24.

Feed Your Scalp: Eco-friendly Haircare from YAROK

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

By: Erin Brady

Mordechai Alvow is the founder of YAROK Haircare a budding, botanically based line (YAROK means “green” in Hebrew) of restorative hair care.  The line represents the convergence of Mordechai’s global perspective, his intuitive styling approach and his ongoing quest for performance-driven products that are healthy for both clients and stylists.  Mordechai has worked with many famous designers, photographers and celebrities and has had his work appear in countless top magazines, and despite the envious bio, Mordechai is anything but intimidating. He’s warm and energetic and his passion for his work is evident from the second you meet him.

The YAROK line of products are all vegan, eco-friendly and have fantastic floral fragrances and essential oils that really make hair look and feel healthier.  My personal favorites are the YAROK Feed Your Ends Leave-in Conditioner, to give hair a much needed dose of moisture and texture in the winter, along with the YAROK Feed Your Roots Mousse, which gives my usually flat hair tons of body. YAROK has really grown into a flourishing hair care collection, expanding its presence to high-end salons and specialty retailers across the US.  Also, now New Yorkers can visit Mordechai at his trendy new Chelsea salon called YAROK Beauty Kitchen, where he has essential oils on display and a creative, calming environment for his top notch haircuts, organic hair coloring and exclusive sensory hair and scalp treatments.

YAROK was created to bring a sense of well being into an otherwise highly chemical salon environment.  One of YAROK’S main goals is to make a positive impact on the health of the hair and scalp while making the least negative impact on the environment: from the packaging to the product formulations. Its formulas are made entirely of all natural, aromatic, pure florals, fruits, herbs and essential oils that are consciously sourced. They are all free of alcohol, parabens, sulfates and cruelty.  Indulge today in products that not only make your hair feel food, but are good for the environment.

YAROK Beauty Kitchen: 39 West 19th Street (btwn 5th and 6th Aves), suite 610 — 212.876.4293.  To learn more and order the products for yourself, visit www.YAROKhair.com.

Hot Off The Runway: Narciso Rodriguez Fall 2011 Hair by Wella Professionals

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

By: Erin Brady

Narciso’s Fall 2011 collection draws inspiration from architectural elements and the combination of these rich, textural materials.  It combines color with neutrals to create graphic shapes and volume.

This season the beauty look embraces the darker side of Narciso Rodriguez and illustrates the strength that modern women embody.  According to Wella Professionals Global Creative Director, Eugene Souleiman, “…she is intelligent and not pretty in an obvious way, but her look is interesting.  She is admired for her character and tough nature, which is reflected in the somewhat unkempt, rough hairstyle.”  A simple ponytail becomes masculine by tying it into a knot on the back of the head.  Rather than keeping hair around the face sleek, it’s mussed up for added texture and roughness that suggests this intentional, uncaring attitude and air of confidence.  This is the perfect hairstyle for going from work to a night out or for those days when your hair isn’t looking its best after your everyday blowout.  Here’s the steps and products used to create this look:

  1. First, spray dry hair with Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz at the roots to get the maximum benefits of the product by adding texture.
  2. Blast hair all over with a hair dryer directing the air and heat at the head to create root lift and texture.  Massage roots to create more volume.
  3. Grab hair and pull into a tight ponytail one inch below the crown and secure with an elastic.
  4. Spray length of ponytail with Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz for some additional texture and then tie ponytail into an actual knot; secure knot in place with a pin.
  5. Gently pull at pieces of hair around the face with fingertips to create a square shape.
  6. Rub Wella Professionals Texture Touch into hands and slick onto hair with palms to create a raw, tight texture that makes hair look dirty and matte.
  7. Spray hair around the face with Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight to add some shine and glossiness to the finished look.

Wella Professionals, the global leader in haircolor, introduces a complete series of new styling products that caters to a variety of hair care needs.  Wella Professionals Care and Styling launches in May 2011 at a suggested retail price of $12 – $17.  Products can be purchased at professional salons across North America. For more information, visit www.wellausa.com.

Free-Spirited Style From Alice + Olivia

Friday, February 18th, 2011

by Kori Ellis

Updos and ponytails that were a bit undone were very popular at Fashion Week. Lead stylist Thomas Dunkin of the Sebastian Professional Stylist Design Team created the gorgeous hair for the Alice + Olivia by Stacey Bendet show.

Alice + Olivia Inspiration:

The Alice + Olivia by Stacey Bendet Fall 2011 collection evokes timeless elegance and unabashed glamour. Stacey Bendet creates a wardrobe for a chic, free-spirited female; an empowered individual who is flawlessly fun and full of life, ready for a party, eccentric and captivating.

Follow the tips below to get the look at home.

  1. To start, dampen the hair with water and generously apply Volupt Spray throughout the hair. Blow the hair out with just your fingers, keeping any natural texture in the hair and making sure the hair has plenty of volume.
  2. Once the hair is completely dry, leave a soft parting where the hair falls into a break naturally. From here, spritz all over with Shine Define for flexible control and gently pull back the hair to either the center or to either side.
  3. Twist very small, subtle sections on the sides and pull hair back into a large chignon and allow what pieces pop out to remain loose. Secure with a natural-colored hair band, matte bobby pins and fine pins. Pull the chignon into a pretty shape and secure with a few more pins.
  4. Finally, spritz the hair with Trilliant for a soft natural hold and beautiful shine.

“Model Off Duty” Hair at Fashion Week

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

by Kori Ellis

At the ORGANIC by John Patrick show at Fashion Week, the models’ hair was very romantic, a little bit messy and glamorous yet natural.

Aveda Hair

Aveda lead stylist Antoinette Beenders created “Model Off Duty” hair using Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion and Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray at the ORGANIC by John Patrick Fall/Winter 2011 Fashion Week presentation.

“The ORGANIC by John Patrick hair for this season is a very real and natural look that can be adapted to fit anyone’s style,” said John Patrick. “It’s like messy teenage hair with a bit of glamour, inspired by the idea of a ‘Model Off Duty’ who quickly pins her hair back. This collection is very ‘90’s romantic—full of mismatched textures. I love how the hair is beautiful and unfussy, echoing the ‘elevated grunge’ vibe of our clothing.”

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Sprinkle Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion throughout the hair for matte texture. Massage with fingertips at the root for slight volume.
  2. Gently backcomb hair at the crown, using a wide-tooth comb to create a textured, ultra roughed-up look, while leaving the ends of the hair untouched. Spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray for light hold.
  3. Using a Mason Pearson brush, loosely brush the top of the hair back to smooth backcombed portions. Allow hair to part naturally.
  4. To create the textured, half-up style, twist and pull one-inch sections from above the ear on each side of the head. Use bobby pins to secure the entwined pieces at the occipital bone at the back of the head.
  5. To keep the haphazard look from being untidy, finish with a holding mist of Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.

Aveda Hair

“John Patrick and I were inspired by the idea of a girl quickly pulling her hair back and pinning it,” said Antoinette Beenders for Aveda. “The concept of reflection inspired the collection, and we loved the idea of a woman sitting down at the mirror to create a realistic and unique hair style for herself. This season’s ORGANIC collection is elegantly devil-may-care, so the perfect nonchalance of the hair complements this aesthetic perfectly.”
