Beat Summer Hair Woes

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

by Kori Ellis

Summer hairSummer is almost here and with it comes hot, sticky weather that can damage your hair or at least, cause bad hair days. To keep your hair looking its best, consider these hair tips, product suggestions and styling ideas from Zahir Ziani, the National Creative Director at Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spas.

Don’t touch! – Playing with or touching your hair can loosen the style out of its shape, creating friction, which causes the hair to expand and increases frizz and volume.

Be cool – Skip blow drying your hair and styling with heated tools. The heat can damage hair cuticles and cause more frizz.

Go long – When temperatures and humidity are at their highest, control your hair by keeping it long and heavy. The trick I use with all my clients is adding in curl to the ends so hair becomes “anchored” or weighed down.

Accept change – The texture of your hair can fluctuate with the seasons, so the products you use in winter may not be effective for smoothing hair and taming frizz in the summer. The Kerastase BAIN OLÉO-RELAX is a perfect summertime beauty essential!

Wear SPF – Hair, like skin, needs protection from harmful UV exposure. Look for hair care brands that offer sun protection in their products, with a minimum of SPF 15. Like with your skin, use hair care products formulated with antioxidant vitamins (A, C, E) to prevent against free radical damage. Also try taking a vitamin supplement for hair and nails during this time of year.

Bounce-back – Use fabric-wrapped elastics; they are gentle on your hair and less likely to cause breakage. If you only wear non-metal elastics, do not wrap them around your hair more than twice. Before you go to bed, remove any elastic gently, as it can tangle hair during the night.

Eva Mendes and Naomi Watts for Pantene

Monday, May 9th, 2011

by Kori Ellis

Eva MendesYou might not think of Eva Mendes and Naomi Watts as being too similar. However, they do have one thing in common — they are the new faces (or should that be “new heads”) of Pantene.

Pantene tapped Eva Mendes to represent their “Breakage to Strength” collection, while Watts will be modeling for their “Flat to Volume” line in the new Pantene ad campaign coming up this summer.

“The amount of torture I put my hair through with flat irons, blow dryers and curling irons leaves my hair extremely damaged,” Mendes said in a press release. “With Pantene I can use all of these tools and still keep my hair healthy.”

“Since I became a mother, the time I have for myself has shrunk dramatically. So I am thrilled with Pantene because the quality of the products helps me get the volume I want with very little effort at all,” said Watts.

The print ads and TV commercials featuring Eva Mendes and Naomi Watts are set to launch in July.

What do you think about the new faces of Pantene?

Hot Off The Runway: Narciso Rodriguez Fall 2011 Hair by Wella Professionals

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

By: Erin Brady

Narciso’s Fall 2011 collection draws inspiration from architectural elements and the combination of these rich, textural materials.  It combines color with neutrals to create graphic shapes and volume.

This season the beauty look embraces the darker side of Narciso Rodriguez and illustrates the strength that modern women embody.  According to Wella Professionals Global Creative Director, Eugene Souleiman, “…she is intelligent and not pretty in an obvious way, but her look is interesting.  She is admired for her character and tough nature, which is reflected in the somewhat unkempt, rough hairstyle.”  A simple ponytail becomes masculine by tying it into a knot on the back of the head.  Rather than keeping hair around the face sleek, it’s mussed up for added texture and roughness that suggests this intentional, uncaring attitude and air of confidence.  This is the perfect hairstyle for going from work to a night out or for those days when your hair isn’t looking its best after your everyday blowout.  Here’s the steps and products used to create this look:

  1. First, spray dry hair with Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz at the roots to get the maximum benefits of the product by adding texture.
  2. Blast hair all over with a hair dryer directing the air and heat at the head to create root lift and texture.  Massage roots to create more volume.
  3. Grab hair and pull into a tight ponytail one inch below the crown and secure with an elastic.
  4. Spray length of ponytail with Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz for some additional texture and then tie ponytail into an actual knot; secure knot in place with a pin.
  5. Gently pull at pieces of hair around the face with fingertips to create a square shape.
  6. Rub Wella Professionals Texture Touch into hands and slick onto hair with palms to create a raw, tight texture that makes hair look dirty and matte.
  7. Spray hair around the face with Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight to add some shine and glossiness to the finished look.

Wella Professionals, the global leader in haircolor, introduces a complete series of new styling products that caters to a variety of hair care needs.  Wella Professionals Care and Styling launches in May 2011 at a suggested retail price of $12 – $17.  Products can be purchased at professional salons across North America. Review: Alterna 3-Minute Shine Boost

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

by Kori Ellis

As a beauty writer, you are sometimes supplied with products that don’t impress. So it’s fantastic when you find one that is worth praising. Recently, I received a few products from Alterna and I was thrilled with their Caviar Anti-aging 3-Minutes Shine Boost.

Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging 3-Minute Shine Boost If you have ever had hair glaze at the salon, you know it’s a fabulous way to get a instant shine boost. If you are looking for a product that will give you similar results at home, this is it.

Alterna 3-Minute Shine Boost is created free of parabens, gluten, phthalates, mineral oil, paraffin, DEA, TEA, petrolatum and PABA. It’s made with healthy ingredients such as grapefruit extract (an antioxidant that nourishes and protects your hair) and vitamin B5 (which smooths the surface with moisture). The product also has caviar extract — a source of Omega-3 and vitamin C. The result is salon-like shine that leaves your hair looking and feeling silky and smooth. And a big plus for me is that it’s great for color-treated hair.

After you shampoo and condition your hair, squeeze out the excess water, and then apply the product from root to tip. Leave on for 3-5 minutes and then rinse out. You can leave it on longer or even apply heat for extra shine. Using it 1-2 times a week is a fantastic option between salon services.

Alterna says its “Age-Control Complex” addresses all types of aging: natural, chemical and environmental, while restoring hydration, strength, vibrancy and elasticity for more youthfull looking hair.

Priced at $25, Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging 3-Minute Shine Boost is available at Sephora.com, Beauty.com, Drugstore.com, Ulta stores, Fred Segal and high-end salons.

5 Winter Hair Care Tips

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

by Kori Ellis

Winter HairCold, windy winter weather can wreak havoc on your hair. Follow these simple hair care tips to keep your locks looking lovely.

Don’t shampoo every day
In the wintertime, use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Though you should condition daily, you only really need to shampoo every other day. Shampooing too often, particularly in cold weather, can cause dry hair and a flaky scalp.

Make sure it’s dry
Before leaving the house, make sure your hair is completely dry. If you go outside with wet hair, it will become frozen hair. And frozen hair isn’t a good thing…it leads to split ends and damaged locks.

Use the right products
To keep your hair looking its best, find treatments and serums that are suitable for your hair type. A product like Bosley Profession Nourishing Leave In ($14.95) protects your hair against freeze and static, while promoting volume and shine. Surya Brasil Restorative Serum is amazing for color-treated hair. It lays frizz to rest, reconstructs broken hair fibers, and gives you smooth, shiny tresses.

Beat the heat
In an ideal world, we could skip blow dryers and flat irons altogether. However in reality, that’s just not possible. Protect your hair from the heat of styling tools with products such as Tresemme Thermal Creation Heat Tamer Spray or John Frieda Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Hair Serum.

Don’t get frizzed out
Unfortunately bad weather makes straight hair go limp and curly hair get frizzy. But don’t let the frizzies frazzle you, check out these fast fixes for frizzy hair. With the right treatments and techniques, you can keep the frizz under control, no matter the weather.
