Most of the time, drugstore makeup is fantastic — affordable and effective. But every once in a while, you find an upscale beauty product that is worth the splurge.
For me, it’s Guerlain Terracota 4 Seasons Tailor-Made Bronzing Powder. This bronzer compact features four matte shades that blend together beautifully to give you an authentic sun-kissed look, no matter the season. You can combine and layer the different shades however you like to get the perfect color and radiance for you.
This bronzing powder is expensive at $74 but with good reason — it’s infused with pure gold. It also contains SPF 10 to give you a little sun protection as well.

Recently, Revlon Brand Ambassador Jessica Biel debuted a special cut of “Hypnoteyzed,” her commercial for Revlon’s new Grow Luscious Plumping Mascara in Times Square.

The new Revlon mascara conditions and plumps eyelashes by 200 percent. Revlon Grow Luscious Plumping mascara will be available in drugstores and mass retailers nationwide on June 1. The 60-second film noir-inspired commercial features Beil along with musician Pharrell Williams and is shot on black and white film. The “Hypnoteyzed” ad will begin running in US movie theaters on June 13.
Wearing Gucci clothing and Christian Louboutin shoes, Biel looked absolutely gorgeous at the event in Times Square. Revlon Global Artistic Director, Gucci Westman explains how he created Jessica’s look:
“To give Jessica a luminous complexion I used my new favorite makeup from Revlon — Revlon Age Defying with DNA Advantage Cream Makeup in Soft Beige. The amazing moisturization properties of the makeup, with SPF 20 protection, make this a perfect summer foundation for women of any age. For the mauve color on her cheeks, I used Revlon Matte Powder Blush in Blushing Berry. Since today was all about long, lush lashes, I wanted to bring focus to the eyes, so I added just a touch of color to lids using the dark brown eyeliner from the Naturally Glamorous CustomEyes Shadow+ Liner palette inside her bottom and top lashes. I groomed her brows with the ColorStay Brow Enhancer just a bit and then applied the NEW Revlon Grow luscious Plumping Mascara –- one coat was all I needed! For a subtle flush of color on her lips, I applied the Revlon Matte Lipstick in Really Red lightly with my fingers.”

When you step out to a party this spring, put your best face forward with the perfect makeup just for springtime.
Get rosy
Your blush shouldn’t be too heavy when the weather warms up. Pick a rosy shade and apply it directly to the applies of your cheeks, then sweep slightly upward and outward. Use a light hand when applying blush so that it doesn’t look overdone. If you have dry skin, try a cream blush rather than a powder.
Wing out
For a spring party, winged eyeliner (not as drastic as Amy Winehouse!) is just perfect. It adds a girly-girl touch that makes your face look unique and puts the emphasis on your eyes. To make your eyes really pop, add a little white eyeshadow or white liner near your tear ducts. It will make your eyes look bigger and brighter.
Gloss up
Put down your lipstick and put on lip gloss instead. For a daytime date, you don’t need makeup that is too heavy or too dark. Find your favorite lip gloss and stick with it. Some glosses get goopy or sticky, one of favorites is Clinique Long Last Glosswear. It comes in 18 shades, protects your lips with SPF 15, and lasts up to eight hours.
For a flirty, fun look that’s beautiful for spring, consider pin-up girl makeup with big false eyelashes and glossy lips. Amy B offers two tutorials, one for vintage pinup girl makeup, and the other for a more subtle pink pinup look.

Emily Giffin fans get excited, the highly addicting first book in her popular romantic series, Something Borrowed, hits theaters on May 6th! You may or may not be familiar with the plot, but the cast is surely one you won’t want to miss. Almay Brand Ambassador Kate Hudson plays the beautiful and vivacious Darcy, and Ginnifer Goodwin plays the seemingly good-girl, Rachel. Darcy is that lead character you love to hate, living in New York City she has a close circle of friends, a gorgeous fiancé and enviable style (not to mention she’s a gorgeous blond). With flawless makeup and effortlessly chic style, Darcy is a girl I wouldn’t mind borrowing from on occasion. While you can’t borrow Darcy’s friends or her fiancé, you can borrow her gorgeous beauty looks with tips, how-to videos and products from Almay.
Almay wants to help consumers capture and recreate three of Kate’s beauty looks from the film. Fans can choose from her day look, which features luminous skin with intensified eye color, her night look, which includes a sultry, smoky eye, and her gorgeous, pulled together professional look, which can be created in just 5-minutes.
Almay has partnered with renowned makeup artist Daniel Martin to create exclusive how-to videos for Almay’s Facebook page that give step-by-step instructions and expert tips and tricks on how to successfully ‘borrow’ Kate’s looks from the movie. The videos will launch on April 18th, perfect timing to create a new spring beauty look. Then, on May 2nd, Almay will have dedicated displays in drugstores with product recommendations for each look, as well as instructional pamphlets for easy application, so you can purchase the products to get the look for yourself.
Almay is also offering consumers the opportunity to enjoy a taste of Darcy’s lifestyle by giving one winner the ultimate beach weekend at the summertime hotspot where Darcy and her friends enjoy the summer — the Hamptons, New York. The sweepstakes will be held starting May 2nd on Almay’s Facebook page. Here’s to borrowing hot beauty looks from your favorite stars!

It was only a matter of time before Estée Lauder’s granddaughter, Aerin, formed her own beauty line. Aerin is known for being the somewhat mysterious face of Lauder, a longtime fixture in the NYC social scene, a fashionista and most importantly the Senior Vice President, Creative Director for Estée Lauder. In her latest venture, just announced today, Aerin is not only creating a beauty line, but a luxury lifestyle brand deemed AERIN LLC. This brand will offer accessories, jewelry, eye wear, home products and the aforementioned beauty line to be sold in department and specialty stores as early as 2012.
Ms. Lauder said, “I’m thrilled to continue playing an active role in the iconic Estée Lauder brand, including serving as global brand ambassador and spokesperson. At the same time, I look forward to pursuing my vision to create the AERIN brand. As I launch this new business, I am excited to have the extraordinary team at Estée Lauder as my partner in creating a beauty collection that will reflect my new brand’s style and spirit. I look forward to our future together.”
With a last name like Lauder and an impeccable sense of style, we are all waiting with baited breath to see what this new line will look like! For those Estée Lauder fans that have long awaited an extension to their beauty offerings that is classic and timeless, Aerin’s line may just be it.

Summer is around the corner (it is, just ignore the snow/hail some cities got tonight), but as the warmer weather approaches, you’ll want to continue to fight fine lines and winkles, but with lighter skincare formulas. When the heat is on, you don’t want to worry about that lotion or cream you put on in the morning giving you extra shine or melting your makeup off. Here are our picks for anti-aging skincare for the summer, all available starting this month!
Drugstore:
- NEUTROGENA Rapid Wrinkle Repair Line: A trio of moisturizers (day, night and an eye cream), that gently delivers the most advanced form of Retinol. Accelerated Retinol SA will smooth wrinkles and diminish the appearance of age spots. Glucose Complex helps to boost the Retinol SA to quickly diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and Hyaluronic Acid moisturizes, replenishes and rejuvenates the look of skin. At $20 each, these products are not only cost-effective, but they’ll deliver results in just one week!
- NEUTROGENA Healthy Skin Firming Cream: A daily firming moisturizer with multi-vitamins, minerals and broad-spectrum SPF 15 (that isn’t a heavy formula), to help protect against daily sun damage ($12).
- NEUTROGENA Healthy Skin Compact Foundation SPF 55 w/ Helioplex: A lightweight cream foundation that provides flawless coverage. The SPF and antioxidant-infused formula helps to protect and nourish skin. Clinically proven to deliver 2.5 times more protection than typical makeup with SPF protection and retain 96% of UVA protection after 5-hours of simulated solar radiation. Functional foundation, we’re sold ($14).
Sephora:
The makers of everyone’s favorite mineral makeup line, bareMinerals, have created a skincare line! The line of cleansers, moisturizers and treatments feature bareMineral’s proprietary miracle ingredient RareMinerals ActiveSoil Complex, which is clinically proven to deliver brighter, younger-looking skin all while providing that coveted glow bareMinerals products are famous for.
- bareMinerals Purely Nourishing Cream for Dry Skin: Improves firmness, elasticity and skin texture while delivering moisture to dry skin. Antioxidants protect skin from the environment leaving skin soft, smooth and luminous ($28).
- bareMinerals Purely Nourishing Cream for Combination Skin: A lightweight moisturizer that hydrates skin while improving firmness, elasticity, radiance and texture. The perfect amount of hydration for combination skin. Protects skin from harsh environmental elements keeping skin healthy and youthful ($28).
The badgals at Benefit also launched a skincare line called B.right Radiant skincare. This collection consists of nine products intended to brighten and rehydrate the skin and includes two facial washes, a facial polish, facial emulsion (with SPF 15), a heavier facial moisturizer, an eye cream, toning lotion, makeup remover and facial mist all of which will be launching in two parts.
- Benefit Triple Performing Facial Emulsion with SPF 15: Uses Tri-Radiance complex to bring hydration to the skin and then helps skin to develop long-term reserves of water for generously moisturized skin. The best part, the complex lacks any oils and includes SPF, perfect for sensitive or acne-prone skin the hydration it needs this spring/summer ($28).

The newest makeup line to hit your local Sephora is called Bite Beauty, founded by Susanne Langmuir. This new, all-natural line offers a variety of products solely for the lips, all infused with the powerful antioxidant resveratol. This line marks the first time that resveratol has been used in lip stains or lipsticks. Resveratol is naturally present in grapes and red wine and it’s both an antioxidant and a potent anti-inflammatory agent all in one. Therefore, these products will protect the delicate lip skin from free radical damage due to sun exposure and pollution, helping with premature aging. You may not think your lips age, but without proper protection they can certainly dry out and get wrinkly, making it hard to use some of your favorite lipsticks, who wants that?! Bite’s products come in hues that range from nude, to plum to vibrant fuchsia and coral and they use only organic shea and fruit butters. Their highly pigmented, long-lasting shades were designed by industry-leading makeup artists. With prices ranging from $18-$36, Bite Beauty offers good-for-you products that are good for your wallet, too. Here are some of the lines best-sellers:
- Luminous Crème Lipstick ($24): Get long-lasting, lush-colored lips with this creamy, antioxidant-rich lipstick—available in 24 shades.
- Lip Shine ($20): Hydrate, illuminate, and condition your lips with this translucent gloss, infused with nourishing jojoba beads.
- Superfruit Butter ($18): This multipurpose mixture contains superfoods that protect, nourish, and moisturize skin, lips, and cuticles
- Vitamin Gel ($18): Give your lips a dose of essential oils and vitamin C with this sheer lip gel, loaded with micronized multivitamins and organic fruit juices.
Bite Beauty products are available exclusively at Sephora.

Let me tell you, Bobbi Brown is a woman that knows her concealers. Her newest kit combines her reformulated Correctors and Concealers to erase dark circles in a unique two-step approach. First, start with the peach-toned Corrector that will brighten and neutralize under eye circles. For pale skin, Bobbi recommends the lighter Corrector shade starting with Porcelain Bisque. For deeper skin tones, she recommends the Medium to Dark Bisque and Peach Shades. Next, use the yellow-toned Creamy Concealer to lighten and blend the under eye area with the rest of the face. This is quick, perfect coverage in its finest state: rich and creamy without being thick. This is my new go-to eye concealer, perfect for use at home, but even more amazing for travel as its compact and will of course limit the number of under-eye products you need. For $32, this double-duty product is all you need for well-rested look.
Another reason to love Bobbi is for her partnership and support of Dress for Success. For the past 10 years she has been empowering women in this program with makeup tips and tricks to help them look and feel their best. This month, Bobbi will be launching a limited-edition Dress For Success Makeup Collection ($60) for which 100% of the proceeds will go straight to the organization. Look for the kit, which will include a palette of five flattering eye shadows, a brownish-pink lip color, pink and clear lip glosses, and mascara, exclusively at Macy’s.

Looking for something that will give you that sexy glow? Unless you are near a beach, you may be feeling a bit pale, so now that it’s getting warmer you will need one thing in your life, a luminizer/illuminator. One of my FAVORITES comes from NARS, their Orgasm Illuminator is an incredible multi-use product that will have your skin looking glowy and fabulous now AND by the time you hit the beach this summer.

Luminizers are the fastest way to achieve a very subtle glow. Used alone or with a foundation or tinted moisturizer the effects can range from very subtle to all out dazzling. The great thing about the NARS illuminator is consistency and color. Now, if you find that Orgasm is the wrong shade for you guess what? NARS makes them in four shades just in case. If you use this with a moisturizer/tinted moisturizer the effect will be very subtle (if you are used to something more natural then this is the way for you). If heavier coverage is needed, this mixes beautifully with foundation as well. My favorite look is alone or with moisturizer.
Here are some tips for working with the product:
- Make sure you start with clean hands Don’t laugh! It’s a common mistake people make when applying things on their faces.
- Start with a small amount of product You can always add more but can’t take any away.
- When mixing with foundation or tinted moisturizer make sure you blend everything well before applying to your face, this way you avoid having spots where the product is more concentrated than others.
- Blend blend blend If you use a sponge I recommend a beauty blender if not use your fingers and work quickly to blend well before it dries.
