One way to take the emphasis off of problem areas, like hips and thighs, is to put the focus on your top.
This summer, look for tops and blouses with unique necklines, interesting patterns and unusual shapes. Here are three of our favorite summer tops. Partner them with a solid, simple skirt, shorts or capris.

You have to love this watery abstract pattern. Pair this silky top with your favorite black pants or a pencil skirt at the office. The halter neckline is sexy and sophisticated. $92 at Nordstrom.

The loose cowl neck and fluid silhouette of this top make it really special. This belted blouse is created from stretch silk for comfort and a beautiful drape. $158 at Nordstrom.

Diane von Furstenberg always offers amazing prints — and this top is no exception. Featuring a blue and white abstract animal pattern, this silky blouse has a figure-flattering shape and adjustable drawstrings at the shoulders. $245 at Nordstrom.

Now that summer is here, you might be shopping for a few new pairs of shorts. When choosing shorts, don’t just pick out the cutest pair — consider your body type to find the most flattering shorts for you.
Walking shorts
Bermuda or walking shorts that hit just above the knee are a fabulous way to hide flabby thighs. However, keep in mind that longer shorts can make your legs look shorter. So if you have short legs, don’t wear the walking shorts with flats — put on a pair of wedge espadrilles instead to elongate the look of your legs.
Short shorts
If you are comfortable with your legs, show them off with a pair of short shorts. We don’t mean shorts that are so short that your rear is hanging out. Rather a pair that is just long enough — maybe a 4-5 inch inseam. These types of shorts are great for women with short legs.
Cuffed jean shorts
Denim shorts that you can roll up the cuffs are very versatile. They can give you the extra coverage you want when they are rolled down, and look adorable rolled up. What’s great about cuff shorts is they also can make skinny legs look a bit thicker.

This season, neon and bright dresses are hot. When the color of your dress is bold, you don’t have to do much else to stay the center of attention. To look your best, follow these tips for what to wear with a bright summer dress.
White sandals
Don’t be matchy-matchy with your shoes and dress. Instead, grab a pair of simple white sandals. Slip-on slides as well as strappy, kitten heels are fabulous options.
Contrasting jewelry
If you are wearing a dress with a modern cut or unique details, keep your jewelry very simple. A single cocktail ring or cuff bracelet is just enough — don’t over accessorize.
A woven bag
Straw and other woven handbags are popular for summertime. And we don’t just mean straw totes. This season, you can find handheld satchels and other ladylike bags in white straw and other summery materials.
The Tibi one-shoulder silk-habotai dress pictured here is available at net-a-porter.com for $320.

Boyfriend jeans hit the fashion scene a few years ago and brought along their summer counterpart, boyfriend shorts. This summer, boyfriend shorts are hotter than ever.

Look for distressed denim shorts that are cuffed at a length that isn’t too short or too long. We love the KUT from the Kloth stretch denim boyfriend shorts ($49 at Nordstom). These shorts feature a classic 5-pocket style and just a touch of spandex for comfort and stretch.
You can wear them uncuffed but they look absolutely adorable when they are cuffed. Partner these shorts with your favorite tanks and tees all summer long. When early fall rolls around, add a cardigan and keep on wearing them.

This summer, getting into neon — but don’t over do it. Instead of wearing a neon yellow dress, add a single neon accessory to your white dress for daytime (or with a black dress at night).
Neon accessories can come in the form of everything from bags to belts. Here are some of our neon favorites, just in time for summer.
Skinny patent belt
Add this skinny belt in neon orange or neon yellow to any outfit. This faux patent belt easily wipes clean and is accented by a polished metal buckle. $30 at Gap.
Cat-eye sunglasses
Chic and cheap, these mod cat-eye wayfarer style sunglasses by SO are available in neon pink or bright yellow. Protect your eyes and look cool too in these affordable shades. On Sale for $12 at Kohl’s.
Unisex watch
Unisex watches are hot right now. This summer, pick up a watch in a vibrant neon shade. The Nooka Unisex line features cool watches with artsy-modern style. This neon blue polyurethane watch will add some oomph to your everyday look. Get the Nooka Unisex Zub Zirc watch for work or for play. $130 at Endless.
Neon tote
Grab a colorful tote bag in neon pink to add some flair to your summer wardrobe. With a bright bag, the lines should be simple. This Vemo faux leather tote bag fits the bill. It’s roomy enough to hold all your summertime essentials. $52 at YESSTYLE.

This summer look for jewelry that takes inspiration from the beach without being too gaudy. In other words, you don’t have to hang seashells from your neck or sparkling blue dolphins from your ears. Just pick pieces that subtly introduce beach elements.
In the Emily Elizabeth Jewelry Summer 2011 collection, you’ll find just that. For this collection, designer Emily Elizabeth Kolins took a subtle approach to summer.
“I chose to use shapes than resemble summer icons. The ‘Fan’ styles resemble the curve of a beach ball, beach umbrella and even a seashell,” the designer says.

With all styles plated in 14k gold, the collection retails between $14-$125, available at emilyelizabethjewelry.com.

This summer, if you want to add just one piece to your wardrobe, make a breezy, swingy white dress.
Look for a dress that isn’t too long or too short — if it hits at the knee or just below, it’s perfect. The swingy shape makes it ideal for parties or it can even be used as swimsuit cover-up.
We love the tiered halter dress by Theory ($295) pictured here. This pretty dress can be worn halter style, or the thin straps can be tied in a bow on the bustine to make it strapless.
You’ll also adore the Lauren by Ralph Lauren ‘Esmeralda’ Linen Sundress ($158). This white linen dress features a full, gently pleated skirt and eyelet embroidery trim. It’s available at Nordstrom in sizes 8-16.
