Best Foundation for Winter

Monday, December 27th, 2010

by Kori Ellis

When the weather changes, you need to change your makeup too. When it comes to foundation, you generally need a foundation with more moisture in the wintertime.

Armani FoundationTo keep your skin from getting dry and flaky in the winter, use moisturizer both morning and night (unless you have extremely oily skin). Pay special attention to the area around your eyes and lips, where wrinkles and fine lines form.

Don’t forget about sunscreen. Even though it might be overcast in the winter, it doesn’t mean you should skip the sunscreen. Look for moisturizer and makeup with SPF. The sun’s glare can be harsh as it bounces off the snow and icy sidewalks.

When selecting a foundation, consider creams rather than liquids or powders. They are hydrating without being too heavy. Though it’s a little expensive, I adore Armani Designer Shaping Cream Foundation SPF 20.

Priced at $65 at most department stores, this silky, cream foundation works with all skin types and provides weightless, smooth coverage. Your skin looks absolutely radiant.

For a more affordable option, turn to Clinique, where you’ll find their City Base Compact Foundation SPF 15. This formula goes on like a cream, then finishes like a silky powder. It’s ultra smooth and very buildable, so you can get as much coverage as you need. Priced at $23, it’s a fantastic buy.

Protect Your Lashes From the Cold

Monday, December 20th, 2010

by Kori Ellis

The cold winter weather can do serious damage to your skin, lips and hair. That’s why we stock up on extra moisturizer, lip balm and deep conditioner in the wintertime. But did you know that your eyelashes can also become dehydrated and brittle?

NeuLash - frozen lashes

The temperature changes from the heated house to the freezing outdoors can dehydrate your lashes. When they lose moisture, they become weak and can fall out. That’s why you need an eyelash conditioner in cold weather.

Recently I tried neuLash, an eyelash conditioner that nourishes your lash line and also helps produce healthier, thicker lashes. Studies show that it produces results in as little as four weeks, but I actually saw some effects in about 2 1/2 weeks.

I’ve tried a variety of lash conditioners with varying results, and this one actually works. The downfall is the price tag. A 60-day supply is $85 and a 120-day supply is $150. You can find neuLash at Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s and Bergdorf Goodman, as well as on www.neuLash.com.

Get-Sexy Inspiration: Christina Hendricks

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

By Jennifer Latkiewicz

Forget the Emmy nod and red-hot career — it’s the porcelain skin, Botticelli-like curves sizzling self-confidence we can’t get enough of.  Here are four easy ways to tap into Christina Hendricks’ innate sultriness and in turn, your inner sexpot.

Turns out, men aren’t the only ones lusting after Christina Hendricks. “Women hit on me. My husband thinks it’s so odd that so many women hit on me,” Hendricks reveals in this month’s Harper’s Bazaar, adding that gay men love her, too. ‘They say to me, ‘Well, I’m not straight, but if I was …’ ‘I think it’s so flattering.”

And though Hendricks spent the last decade making a number of guest television appearances, it wasn’t until her breakout role in 2007 as bombshell secretary Joan Holloway on AMC’s Mad Men that she solidified her sex symbol status. In an industry where a size zero equates to beauty, the flame-haired siren is bucking the trend with her voluptuous figure, and inspiring women everywhere to embrace their curves.

Channel your inner bombshell and steal the spotlight with these Christina Hendricks-inspired get-sexy secrets:

1. When it comes to sexy female figures, more is definitely more…

Get some extra oomph with an ultra-sexy corset or bustier — the Miraculous Lace Bustier by Victoria’s Secret will instantly add up to 2 full cup sizes and help create the look of an hourglass shape.

2. But in terms of makeup, less is still more.

A far cry from the rich, bold colors favored by her Mad Men onscreen persona, Hendricks’ everyday hues are more subdued, but that doesn’t mean they’re any less sexy. One of her favorite beauty products? Sugarbomb by Benefit, a shimmering quartet of rose, soft pink, plum, and peach powder that adds the perfect dose of sun-kissed glamour.

3. Get fired up with a hair color as hot as you are.

Upload your photo to Clairol’s Try it On Studio and take a virtual walk on the wild side with a fun, smokin’ hot new hue. Whether it’s a crimson red, ebony black or platinum blond, try out a few fearless looks to complement your sexpot attitude. (Who knows what a digital dye job might inspire?)

4. Know that you’re irresistible.

Knockout physique and hot makeup aside, what makes Hendricks so ridiculously sexy is her self-confidence. ”Back when I was modeling, the first time I went to Italy I was having cappuccinos every day, and I gained 15 pounds. And I felt gorgeous!” Hendricks recounted to Elle U.K. in a recent interview. “I would take my clothes off in front of the mirror and be like, Oh, I look like a woman. And I felt beautiful, and I never tried to lose it, ’cause I loved it.”

This coming from Esquire’s Sexiest Woman of the Year. Ladies, take note.

Winterize Your Skin

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

by Kori Ellis

When it comes to winter skincare, keeping your skin hydrated is essential. But what products should you use? Jason Ascher, makeup guru and resident artist for Barneys New York, offers us these fabulous tips for winterizing your skin. Try Jason’s tips and get beautiful skin, no matter how cold it is outside.

Winterize Your Skin

  1. Banish the foaming cleansers and harsh exfoliants and get into cream cleansers, balms and oil cleansers. Yes, oil — even for oily skin. Cleansing oils are anhydrous, meaning they break up and rinse away in water, leaving your skin clean, soft and supple rather than tight and stripped. Skin stripped of its natural PH and oil balance will compensate by producing…OIL. Millions of Asian women can’t be wrong!
  2. Try a richer, more emollient moisturizer, used sparingly during the day and retire the light, oil-free products until there is some more humidity in the air in spring. Same for the body, try a rich body butter like Resting in the River’s Body Butter for intense moisture.
  3. Avoid powder foundations and matte liquid makeup and try a tinted moisturizer or hydrating foundation and cream blush. The dyes in heavily colored lipsticks will dry out your lips, so opt for sheers, stains and tinted balms.

Expert Beauty Tips: Winter Makeup

Monday, November 8th, 2010

by Kori Ellis

As the weather cools down, it’s time to experiment with new makeup and skincare products for winter to have your skin looking its best. We had the opportunity to talk to internationally renowned beauty expert, Bella Schneider — owner of LaBelle Day Spas & Salons in San Francisco, California. Bella provides us with insight on winter makeup trends, skincare tips and more.

Winter makeupNewest makeup trends for winter:
Applying salmon colored concealer blended on the inside corner of the eye and under the eyes will cover and brighten. Switch your foundation and/or mineral powder to slightly lighter shade and powder with a large kabuki brush and blend well. Most of your emphasis should be directed to your eyes and lips. Red is a permanent style staple and matches well this season’s fashion. For dramatic yet soft look, rim the eyes with a bright paprika shadow and trade the black/chocolate liner for upper and lower lids.

How to take your makeup from the office to a night out:
Intensify your daytime look by increasing the liner and adding color to the eye area (if you are feeling daring, consider using sparkle eyeliner). Curl lashes and paint them for thicker look and more drama by adding color to your basic brown or black mascara in tones (such as blue), that will give all eyes the perfect sparkle. Be sure to separate and brush the lashes. Once this is done, add color to enhance the brows for more drama with a simple eye brow pencil. Lastly, darken the lips to match your attire (red is in, so wear red lips)!!

Best skincare tips for winter:
Skin can become dehydrated and look dull when the climate is cooler. Exfoliate with gentle blend of red wine and lactic acid peel and slough gently with natural salt and herbs scrub. It is essential to use gentler cleansers to wash and remove makeup, such as milky light blend or gentle mousse with hydrating components and aloe extracts. To feel clean and dewy, yet not dry, use a weekly hydrating mask with the newest probiotic peptides to increase the glow, and apply serums with hyaluronic acid as a base prior to using foundation. Reduce the SPF in your moisturizers to SPF 30, especially avoiding the tinted ones so that the skin is brighter and does not look as if you are “carrying” old summer tan.

Eye Makeup Tips from Jemma Kidd

Monday, November 8th, 2010

by Kori Ellis

Jemma Kidd, international makeup artist and creator of three distinctive make up brands: Jemma Kidd Make Up School, Jemma Kidd PRO and JK, offers these eye makeup and beauty tricks for fall and winter.

Eyebrows should be strong to provide a confident frame for the face, so consider having yours shaped professionally at the start of the season and invest in a brow kit to keep them tidy and defined.

Eye MakeupEyes often water in the cold and wind, so avoid eyeliner or mascara that is likely to run. Jewel and berry colors are fantastic for eyeshadow — try the brighter tones in a moisturizing cream shadow on the lid or to define the socket, as well as the smoky shades that look so sexy. Avoid too much pink, as this brings out redness in the eyes and skin. Shimmery metallic eyeshadow is great for winter drama.

Reinventing summer’s vibrant eye colors:

  • In winter, bright colors — especially blues and greens can be applied across the whole eyelid and teamed with graphic black eyeliner for a clean, modern look.
  • Use a primer across your lids to smooth the texture and even out any redness.
  • Sweep color across the lids with a brush, taking it up to the socket line. Apply dry for a sheer wash of color, or wet for a bolder result (Eye Wardrobe Eyeshadow Quarter, $38).
  • Outline the whole of the eyes, including the inner rims, with black eyeliner (Define Stayput Eyeliner in Pitch, $20).
  • Wear a nude shape on the lips to balance the looks (Hi-Shine Hydrating Glosstick in Bridgetown, $25).
  • Keep the complexion muted—all you need is a sheer tawny powder blush swept lightly across the cheeks (Tailored Colour Powder Blush Duo, $28).

Jemma Kidd Make Up School and Jemma Kidd Pro products are available at Space NK and SpaceNK.com, and JK Jemma Kidd products are available at Target.
